What 49 CFR 396.11 actually says
✓ Required
A written report at the completion of each day's work on each vehicle operated, identifying the vehicle and listing any defect or deficiency that would affect safe operation. The carrier repairs anything listed that would likely affect safety, and keeps the report for three months from the date it was prepared.
✕ Not required
A no-defect report. FMCSA rescinded that requirement in December 2014 — if no defect is discovered by or reported to the driver, no report is required. Fleets are still printing books of blank forms and paying drivers to fill one out every night for nothing.
